Qwest Customers Discover Non-Published Number No Barrier to Sales Calls.

Jul. 23--You may be able to escape many annoying telemarketing calls by getting an unlisted local phone number, but you may still get some calls -- from the phone company itself.

Qwest Communications routinely telemarkets its own services to phone customers with "non-published" phone numbers, unless they specifically opt out of the practice.

After getting five calls from Qwest telemarketers last Monday, Marty Ittner of Tucson complained that at best, the practice doesn't make sense, and at worst, it's "unethical."
