Controversy over "Chainsaw Al" Raises Doubts about Executive Search Firms.

Jul. 24--Executive search firms, those secretive agencies retained to find CEOs and other executives, were in an uncomfortable spotlight last week.

A New York Times story on Monday said ousted Sunbeam Corp. Chief Executive Albert Dunlap had been fired from two executive positions earlier in his career. Dunlap had been recruited for Sunbeam by Korn/Ferry International, the world's largest search firm.

In litigation with one of the former employers, the company raised allegations of accounting fraud. The lawsuit was later settled. Fast-forward to 1998: At Sunbeam, Dunlap was fired amid allegations of accounting irregularities at the Boca Raton-based...
