GM Has Its Hopes Riding on New Product Development Executive.

Aug. 3--General Motors Corp. hopes Bob Lutz, who lured folks into showrooms by helping launch the Dodge Viper and Plymouth Prowler while at Chrysler Corp., can perform the same magic with GM at age 69.
GM--which is looking to inject new life into its product offerings after watching its share of the U.S. market languish under the target 30 percent level for three years in a row--hired Lutz as vice chairman of product development, effective Sept. 1.
Lutz will step down as chairman and chief executive of Exide Corp., a Princeton, N.J., battery-maker he joined in 1998 after retiring as Chrysler vice chairman, shortly before its acquisition by Daimler-Benz AG was completed.
