Aug. 13--The California Supreme Court deserves applause this week for stomping on what could have been a dangerous precedent. But gun rights defenders and manufacturers, in their relief, should not become too enamored of the beleaguered defendent, Navegar Inc. -- the Miami-based gun maker is not one to emulate, nor is it worthy of great respect.
The court ruled -- in synch with judges across the country -- that victims' families cannot sue gun makers simply because their products were used illegally. Plaintiffs had argued Navegar's marketing of the TEC-DC9 machine pistol specifically targeted people inclined to use them on crowds of innocents.
