Lockheed Plant in Texas Gets Lift as Pentagon Gives Nod to New Jet Fighter.

Aug. 16--WASHINGTON--The Pentagon gave the green light Wednesday for production of the F-22 Raptor, the next-generation jet fighter that will be partly built in Fort Worth by Lockheed Martin Corp.

"It's very good news for Lockheed and us in Fort Worth," said Rep. Kay Granger, R-Fort Worth, whose district includes the Lockheed fighter plane plant.

If approved by Congress, the decision would all but ensure the future of the Air Force program, which key Republicans tried to kill two years ago over concerns about cost and performance.

Equipped with radar-evading stealth technology, the Raptor is intended to be the Air Force's next front-line fighter....
