Kannapolis, N.C., Breaks Ground on Business Park.

Aug. 17--KANNAPOLIS, N.C.--The city, trying to move beyond a textile-based economy, broke ground on its Gateway Business Park Thursday morning.
Clutching golden shovels, city officials grinned and said they hoped the 85-acre park, off N.C. 73 near Interstate 85, will attract new industries and distributing companies.
The city spent about $2 million to buy the property and joined Charlotte-based developer MarkPiercePoole Properties to market it.
"We stand here today in an area that has been a dream of Kannapolis for a long time," said Mayor Ray Moss, who later climbed into a trackhoe to move the first pile of dirt.
