Massachusetts Ranks 48th in Nation in Nursing Home Funding, Study Shows.

Aug. 30--Massachusetts provides less funding for nursing homes than all but two other states, jeopardizing the quality of life for thousands of the Commonwealth's elderly, according to a national study to be released today.

Three-quarters of the state nursing home system depends on funding from Beacon Hill, and the study found that lawmakers fail to cover the cost of caring for patients by about $188 million annually. Only New Jersey and Vermont do worse, the study found. Nursing home operators blame this financial crunch for the closings of about 70 Massachusetts nursing homes over the past two years, about 12 percent of the total.
