Scanner Maker PSC Lays Off 60 Workers in Eugene, Ore.

Sep. 4--In a fresh round of cuts, PSC Inc., a bar code scanner maker with factories in Eugene, said Friday that it's laying off 80 workers -- about 60 of them in Eugene.

President and CEO Edward Borey said the national economic slowdown has lasted longer than expected, and PSC must cut costs to remain profitable.

"We had anticipated an economic pickup in the second half, and we're just not seeing it," he said. "We're concerned that the economic downturn is going to go into next year."

Borey estimated that the layoffs will save the company 15 percent over the next 12 months. He said he did not anticipate further cuts.
