Opening of New Nordstrom's at St. Louis-Area Mall May Affect Other Retailers.

Sep. 7--The opening of a Nordstrom's department store at Westfield Shoppingtown West County is expected to have a slight effect on sales at other higher-end retailers. The store's entry into the region is seen as a positive sign for retail development in the St. Louis area.
But the slowing economy has dampened the expansion plans of retailers: Nordstrom, based in Seattle, has scaled back its long-term plans, and an executive at J.C. Penney said the Texas-based chain might close several locations. Also, the retail real-estate industry in the St. Louis area is experiencing a similar slowdown.
