After Dot-Com Adventure, Boston Venture Dealmaker Comes Home Again.

Sep. 10--For Bruce Johnston, it's almost as if he'd never left. He even has his old office back.

The TA Associates dealmaker is back, much to his own surprise, after a two-year adventure in Internet start-up land. Back in a suit and tie. Back in an office tower on High Street. Johnston left the Boston-based venture giant where he was a rising star in summer 1999 to open an East Coast office for Idealab, the California incubator best known for spawning eToys, the now-defunct online toy retailer. He went in search of gold, and a chance to ride the Web wave. But the music stopped soon after he arrived.

That's when his life began to look like an allegory for the Internet era....
