Orange County, Fla., Leaders Consider Tree Protection Ordinance.

Sep. 11--Fourteen months after Orange County leaders began talking about protecting trees -- and decades after other Central Florida communities adopted tree ordinances -- county commissioners are poised to take action today.

But the proposed law, designed to stop the wholesale clearing of trees in the name of development, is now weaker than it was last year.

After being labored over in committees laden with developers for more than a year, the proposed law would not protect any tree less than 8 inches in diameter.

That's about triple the 3-inch minimum originally suggested by Commissioner Ted Edwards.

It means fewer trees would be protected....
