E-check Concept Gets Biggest Test as Wal-Mart Begins Trial.

Sep. 16--There are lots of ways to move money around these days including bank debit and credit cards, electronic transfers, e-banking, automatic direct deposits and withdrawals and pre-paid cards.

None have made personal check writing history yet.

Consumers still pull out their checkbooks for about one-third of all retail spending. Checks remain second only to cash as the most popular method of payment at retail, according to TeleCheck Services Inc.

But those 2 3/4 by 6-inch pieces of paper that come in standard bank blue, or personalized with anything from flowers to flotillas, are beginning to get slightly different treatment.
