Verizon Awaits Ruling on Permission to Enter Pennsylvania Long-Distance Market.

Sep. 17--Federal officials are to decide Wednesday whether Verizon Communications Inc. may offer long-distance telephone service in Pennsylvania.

Approval by the Federal Communications Commission is the last hurdle Verizon must clear.

"We remain confident," Verizon spokesman Harry J. Mitchell said Friday.

"We've put a very compelling case forward," he said, one which has been "fully, fully examined" by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission.

The FCC requires that a state's local phone service be open to competition before it allows incumbent Baby Bells, such as Verizon, to offer long-distance service in that state.
