German Utility to Pay $7.6 Billion for Voorhees, N.J.-Based Water Provider.

Sep. 18--A German utility plans to buy American Water Works Co. Inc. for $7.6 billion, including debt.

RWE AG of Essen, Germany, will pay $46 in cash for each share of Voorhees, N.J.-based American Water Works stock. It also would assume $3 billion in debt.

Hershey-based Pennsylvania-American Water Co. is a major component of American Water Works, serving more than 2 million Pennsylvanians through 560,000 customer accounts. In the Harrisburg area, Pennsylvania-American has more than 46,000 customers and serves 139,000 people.
