FCC Approves Verizon's Bid for Long-Distance Service in Pennsylvania.

Sep. 20--The Federal Communications Commission approved Verizon Communications Inc.'s bid to offer long-distance telephone service in Pennsylvania yesterday.

The decision, by a 3-1 vote, makes Pennsylvania the fourth state in which Verizon, as the incumbent local-phone provider, can also offer long-distance. The FCC previously granted approval for Verizon to sell the service in New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

The road to yesterday's FCC decision was a tough one for Verizon, marked by litigation brought by competitors and intense examination by state regulators over several years.
