Sep. 20--Boeing workers have been through layoffs before, and many know what to expect. Typically, managers personally hand out 60-day layoff notices to workers.
Layoffs within the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) are done by seniority, within specific job classifications. Workers with seniority who are laid off can "bump" someone with less experience, and they also have "return rights" to a previously held job.
The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) has a different system: Workers are assigned a ranking related to their value to the company.
