Sep. 21--PRE-PAID LEGAL HIRES GRANT THORNTON AS AUDITOR: Pre-Paid Legal Services Inc. said Thursday it has hired Grant Thornton LLP as its independent auditing firm, replacing Deloitte & Touche LLP.
Earlier this year, Pre-Paid's accounting methods were spotlighted in The Wall Street Journal after critics questioned the company's practice of recording advance commissions paid to salespeople as assets rather than expenses.
The Securities and Exchange Commission later ruled that Pre-Paid's advance commission payments to its salespeople should have been expensed when paid, and the company's failure to do so was not in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.
