Early-Retirement Package Unlikely for Boeing Workers; Firm Fears Talent Drain.

Sep. 22--Boeing workers may be in for a disappointment if they are hoping that early-retirement offers could minimize the number of layoffs as the company prepares to slash as many as 30,000 jobs in 15 months.
The last time Boeing offered an early-retirement package, in 1995, the company lost so many skilled veteran employees that it later was forced to rehire some of them.
That means most of the Boeing workers who will be leaving the company during its most massive downsizing in decades won't be doing so by choice.
"I don't believe (a buyout offer) is being considered at this stage," said Peter Conte, a Boeing spokesman.
