U.S. Airways to Lay Off 1,100 Philadelphia Employees.

Sep. 28--U.S. Airways announced yesterday it would lay off 1,100 of its 6,500 Philadelphia-based employees as it tries to cut costs following a steep drop in air travel following the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.

The local cuts affect about 150 pilots, 730 flight attendants, 145 fleet service personnel who handles baggage, 60 customer service workers, according to union spokespeople. The rest of the layoffs are among administrative workers.

Overall, 17 percent of the local employees are being laid off between and October 12.
