AMR Corp. to Lay Off about 20,000 Workers.

Sep. 29--AMR Corp. reached into its management and support staff ranks on Friday in an attempt to save money at its troubled airlines: American Airlines Inc., TWA Airlines LLC and American Eagle Airlines Inc.
Fort Worth-based AMR expects to ultimately lay off about 20,000 people -- 15,000 at American, 3,000 at TWA, and 1,700 at American Eagle.
Friday's round of notices went to 1,400 workers, including many at headquarters. Already, the company has announced that it will eliminate 2,700 workers on the fleet service staff, 986 flight attendants, 386 American pilots and 120 TWA pilots.
