Two Airlines Say More Seats Being Filled.

Oct. 2--FORT WORTH, Texas--American Airlines said it filled 53.2 percent of its available seats during the last 20 days of September, and Continental Airlines said it filled 54.1 percent during the last week of September.

Both statistics are remarkably low but were slightly higher than expected in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist hijackings.

That helped boost a growing view that the industry is beginning to see a small recovery. Earlier Monday, the Air Transport Association, the industry's lobby group, reported that most carriers in recent days have been able to fill just over half of their seats.
