FCC Sets New Deadlines for Location Technology in Cell Phones.

Oct. 6--The Federal Communications Commission granted wireless companies more time Friday to implement technology that would pinpoint cellular users' location when they call 911.

The FCC, telling wireless firms to intensify their efforts, gave the nation's five biggest carriers new phased-in deadlines, beginning later this year, that vary based on the technology each company is using.

Carriers were supposed to start rolling out the second phase of the Enhanced 911 systems on Oct. 1. The system gives 911 operators a caller's location to within 50 to 100 feet. Most wireless firms had asked the FCC for waivers from the rule, saying the technology wasn't ready....
