Florida Regulators Consider BellSouth Application for Long-Distance Service.

Oct. 10--BellSouth Corp. will renew its quest for telecommunications' Holy Grail on Thursday when the Florida Public Service Commission considers the giant phone company's application to enter the long-distance market.

Since the PSC shot down BellSouth's first long-distance petition in 1997, the company has struggled mightily to convince regulators that it has opened itself to local phone service competition -- the basic requirement for approval of its application.

Now, the state's largest local phone company says it has met the test. But two of the largest long-distance carriers -- MCI WorldCom and AT&T -- are fighting to stop the drive.
