Ford to Delay Offer of Early-Retirement Package to White-Collar Force.

Oct. 12--Ford Motor Co. white-collar employees expecting early-retirement offers on Monday will have to wait a little longer.

Training to teach supervisors how to deliver the packages without hurting employees' feelings and drawing lawsuits has been going on for a couple of weeks, and offers will be made in the next few weeks, said spokesman Nick Sharkey.

The 4,000 to 5,000 voluntary early retirements are thought by industry analysts, insiders and Ford managers to be a first step toward eliminating 20,000 positions -- up to half of them white-collar jobs -- to meet Wall Street demands for a "Chrysler-like restructuring."
