More Than 3,000 Flight Attendants Take Voluntary Furlough from United.

Oct. 17--More than 3,000 United Airlines flight attendants are taking a voluntary three-month furlough from the company, some because they are uncomfortable flying after last month's terrorist attacks, according to their union representatives.

The September hijackings caused a falloff in air travel by consumers and led United to announce that it needed to reduce its workforce by 20 percent.

The airline said it needed to cut its roster of 25,000 flight attendants by 5,374 positions for the November through January period, said Victoria Pierce, spokeswoman for the Association of Flight Attendants council at United.
