NASCAR Tells Drivers to Use Head-and-Neck Devices.

Oct. 18--NASCAR on Wednesday mandated head-and-neck restraint devices for drivers in all three of its major series, a move that follows months of controversy about the racing organization's safety policies.
The rule change, effective immediately, comes after six stock-car drivers died of injuries caused by violent head movement in the past 17 months. Five of those deaths, including seven-time champion Dale Earnhardt, were in NASCAR. The most recent death, Blaise Alexander, was in the closely allied Automobile Racing Club of America; he died Oct. 4 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C.
