United Airlines May Reduce Labor Contract Offers and Seek Concessions.

Oct. 18--United Airlines may lower its contract offers to 45,000 ground workers and seek concessions from its 10,500 pilots and other workers, analysts said Wednesday. Union officials said they would oppose any such effort.

James Goodwin, chief executive of United parent UAL Corp., wrote in a letter to employees this week that the airline "will perish" next year if it can't stem its financial losses, which were significant even before the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. Goodwin said "nothing is sacred or off-limits" in United's efforts to cut costs, and while he didn't explicitly mention pay and benefit concessions, that's what he's after, airline industry experts said.
