Apple Computer Unveils Portable Music Player.

Oct. 24--Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs introduced the $399 iPod portable music player Tuesday, a device about the size of a deck of cards that could signal a transformation for the company.
Right now, Apple's mission centers on personal computers. If this new consumer electronics vision succeeds, it could mean an expansion of that mission to include standalone digital devices that benefit from connections to Apple computers, said Phil Schiller, vice president of worldwide product marketing for Apple. The iPod does not work with non-Apple computers, though Apple will consider providing Windows-compatible software next year.
