Takeoff-Landing Design Was a Key Factor in Boeing's Loss of JSF Contract.

Oct. 31--Throughout the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) competition, Boeing boasted that its innovative entry was unlike any aircraft ever built.
But there was one crucial technology Boeing decided to update for the JSF rather than develop from scratch: the direct-lift system that enables AV-8B Harriers flown by the U.S. Marines and British Royal Air Force to hover in midair and land straight down like a helicopter.
That decision looms large. When Pentagon officials told Boeing why they selected Lockheed Martin as the prime contractor for JSF, the superior performance of Lockheed's alternative lift-fan system was cited as key.
