Phoenix-Based Supermarket Chain Files for Bankruptcy Protection.

Nov. 7--Southwest Supermarkets LLC, a Phoenix-based chain that catered to the Hispanic community there and in Tucson, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The company also has a pre-sale agreement with Bashas' to sell that chain some of its Phoenix and Tucson stores.

"The filing of the Chapter 11 case will allow certain of our stores to continue to serve our Hispanic community under the Bashas' Food City banner," said Tony Gioia, president and CEO of Southwest Supermarkets, in a written statement.

Gioia did not return Star telephone calls seeking further details. Last month, the company closed two of its nine Tucson-area stores....
