American pulling out of Seattle-Tokyo route.

Nov. 10--American Airlines plans to discontinue its daily flights between Seattle and Tokyo on Jan. 8, saying a falloff in traffic from a weak economy and the terrorist attacks made the route impractical.

The announcement is the most high-profile service cancellation so far at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport as carriers continue to make permanent schedule changes in the post-Sept. 11 world. Last month, United Airlines ended its West Coast United Shuttle service, including flights between Seattle and Eugene and Seattle and Yakima.

American now operates six nonstop flights weekly from Seattle to Tokyo's Narita Airport with a Boeing 777 twin-aisle plane.
