Nov. 25--With theme park attendance down sharply in the wake of Sept. 11, Downtown Disney and Universal's CityWalk are competing for the same, increasingly scarce market.

Built in the late '90s, both these entertainment and restaurant strips are geared to lure tourists, although Universal's CityWalk is far better positioned to do so as they enter or leave its two adjacent theme parks. And both also strive to attract local residents, from well-heeled patrons able to dine on $35 entrees at Emeril's at CityWalk to show-goers prepared to plunk down $70 a ticket at Cirque du Soleil in Downtown Disney.
