Livermore, Calif., Laboratory Director Says He's Stepping Down.

Dec. 9--LIVERMORE, Calif.--Lawrence Livermore Laboratory's longtime director, C. Bruce Tarter, who has presided during a time of great turbulence, announced he will step down in 2002.
Tarter's move after seven years as head of the national security facility comes at a time of relative calm for the lab and renewed relevance for its mission in the wake of the September terrorist attacks.
This respite precipitated his decision to step down now, Tarter told lab employees Friday. His departure follows the calming of security concerns after the Wen Ho Lee espionage case and a $1 billion cost overrun at the lab's biggest construction project.
