California Cell Phones, Pagers Could Get Own Area Codes under Federal Ruling.

Dec. 14--New wireless phones, pagers and other phone-dependant technologies could get their own area codes under a federal ruling designed to conserve phone numbers in the face of overwhelming demand.
The Federal Communications Commission ruled this week that state regulators such as the California Public Utilities Commission can assign area codes to specific technologies such as wireless phones rather than to geographic areas.
Regulators see this as one way to reduce the number of times a region such as Sacramento would get a new area code. Adding area codes to a region is considered a major inconvenience as businesses must change their stationery and...
