Hialeah, Fla., Medical Supply Firm to Transport, Store New Voting Equipment.

Dec. 14--Broward County's new voting equipment will make a sidetrip to Hialeah before arriving in Fort Lauderdale because of a $878,000 subcontract steered to a medical supply firm to meet affirmative action goals.

American Medical Depot has no experience with election machinery, but was hired to transport and store the voting booths and touch-screen computers after county officials demanded the manufacturer give 10 percent of its $17.2 million contract to minority businesses. The voting machines will be trucked from Nebraska to American Medical's warehouse in Hialeah and reshipped to Fort Lauderdale.
