BellSouth to Cut 42 Union Jobs in Central Florida.

Dec. 15--With demand for basic telephone service falling because of the recession, BellSouth Corp. on Friday said it will eliminate 42 union jobs in Central Florida as part of company-wide cutbacks.

The company is offering a financial package to induce 1,200 employees to leave the company "because of the economic downturn," said Peg Bernhardt, a spokesman at BellSouth headquarters in Atlanta.

"We really anticipate there will be no layoffs or very few layoffs," she said. However, the company does not rule out dismissals should the financial package attract too few volunteers.
