Pentagon Questions Tilt-Rotor Technology, But Will Renew Testing of Aircraft.

Dec. 22--WASHINGTON--The Pentagon's procurement chief questioned the safety and combat utility of the V-22 Osprey's tilt-rotor technology Friday but agreed to renew testing of the revolutionary aircraft.

"I personally have some doubts, but the only way to prove the case one way or the other is to put the airplane back into flight test," said Pete Aldridge, undersecretary of defense for acquisitions.

The Osprey has been grounded since last year, when two fatal crashes killed 23 Marines.
