Ventura County, Calif., Companies Fare Poorly on Stock Market in 2001.

Jan. 2--2001 was the year that finally sucked the last air from the New Economy bubble and Ventura County stocks were not immune.
Shares of half of the 56 publicly traded companies in Ventura County and surrounding area are down from a year ago. Almost half of those also had lost value in 2000.
"It's been an ugly year," said Steve Wagner, a Ventura certified financial planner. "This is the first time since 1973-74 that we've had two consecutive years where the major indexes were down."
One of the top local gainers in 2000, Power-One Inc. (Nasdaq: PWER) is down 76 percent from a year ago. The Camarillo-based power-supply maker spent most of 2001...
