Norfolk, Va., University's Efforts Ease Way for Disabled.

Jan. 3--NORFOLK, Va.--Jim Vogel had tried lip reading before. And cupping his hand over his ear to block out background noise. And getting a spot in the front row, on the left side, so his better ear faced the professor.

But even with those adjustments, he always had to check with his college classmates afterward to see if his notes at all reflected the lecture.

His situation improved when he transferred to Norfolk State University in 1998. Beverly B. Harris, who coordinates services for disabled students, found a microphone for his professors that transmitted directly to his earpiece.
