Atlanta Gas Light Plans to Ask for Rate Hike.

Jan. 5--Atlanta Gas Light Co. plans next week to ask the Georgia Public Service Commission to approve a rate increase.

At least part of the request will be attributed to the utility's rocky transition to natural gas deregulation.

Russ Williams, a spokesman for AGL, declined on Friday to say how big the rate increase proposal will be. The company said previously an increase of between $28 million and $40 million a year is justified.

But the PSC staff has said AGL, the state's No. 1 natural gas utility, is earning $33 million a year above authorized levels and its rates should be reduced by the same amount. For consumers, that would mean an...
