Jan. 7--An indication of how investor attention has shifted over the past two years can be seen in the types of local companies whose stock price improved the most in 2001.
Instead of those offering semiconductors and flashy Web sites, companies seeing the biggest gains specialized in toys, fresh produce and nursing homes.
Some of 1999's highest-flying tech companies saw some of the deepest declines by 2001. But for two local companies with less cutting-edge business models, the reverse was true. The Star's ranking of top gainers and losers for the year compared 38 companies in the region whose year-end stock price was at least $5 in either 2000 or 2001....
