Atlanta Gas Light Co. Seeks $50 Million Rate Hike.

Jan. 12--Atlanta Gas Light Co. wants to raise its natural gas rates by $50.3 million a year.

In a filing with the Public Service Commission on Friday, the utility said the rate hike -- which amounts to $2.32 a month for the average household -- is needed to raise authorized profit levels, cover increased costs and pay for a new $60 million customer information system.

The rate increase would be the first since 1993 for Georgia's No. 1 natural gas utility. The last time AGL's rates were reviewed by the commission was in 1998, when rates were reduced by $7.4 million a year.

The rate hike request comes at a difficult time for the company....
