Universal Studios Florida in Orlando Offering Incentives to Film Producers.

Jan. 12--Universal Studios Florida, hoping to light a fire under the state's filmmaking community, is offering steep discounts to independent producers who make their movies in Orlando.

Paul Meena, vice president of Universal's production group, said the company will rent a sound stage to producers for $500 a day -- 80 percent below the usual fee of $2,600. For a 14-day shoot, the discount could save a producer nearly $30,000.

To qualify, producers must be working with a film budget of $5 million or less and must hire 80 percent of their crew from within Florida.
