NCAA Official: Chief's Retirement Will Not Impact College Sports Betting Ban.

Jan. 17--WASHINGTON--The pending retirement of NCAA President Cedric Dempsey signals the departure of another major player in the debate to ban Nevada sports books from taking bets on college athletic events.

Dempsey, 70, announced Tuesday he will step down at the end of this year when his contract expires. NCAA president since 1994, Dempsey has strongly supported bills in Congress to ban college sports betting in Nevada.

"I would not anticipate Mr. Dempsey's announcement will have any impact on the legislation. He will be here for the rest of the year," NCAA spokeswoman Jane Jankowski said.
