James Earl Gaffe Has Plaque Maker for Lauderhill, Fla., Celebration in Retreat.

Jan. 17--A company that once made a plaque honoring President Gerald R. Furr is reeling from a far more embarrassing gaffe.

This time, Merit Industries produced a plaque thanking acclaimed actor James Earl Jones for serving as featured speaker at Lauderhill's Martin Luther King Day ceremonies.

But, in what the company says is an inadvertent misprint, the plaque calls James Earl Jones "James Earl Ray."

Ray, of course, was Martin Luther King's assassin. The plaque praises James Earl Ray for "keeping the dream alive."

City officials learned of the blunder on Tuesday, and spent Wednesday in damage-control. City and company officials were fielding calls...
