Utah Medical Products Inc. Awarded $20 Million in Patent Suit against Tyco.

Jan. 18--A federal jury has awarded Utah Medical Products Inc. $20 million in damages in its nearly 5-year-old patent infringement lawsuit against Graphic Controls Corp., an international maker of industrial and medical data devices.

First filed in Salt Lake City's U.S. District Court on June 3, 1997, the complaint alleged that Buffalo, N.Y.-based Graphic Controls' Kendall-LTP Softrans 4000 -- a disposable intrauterine pressure catheter device used to monitor a mother's labor -- infringed Utah Medical's patent for a similar device, the Intran Plus.
