Jan. 25--COX STOCK: Bill Gates and his foundation spent some of their billions last October, taking a large position in Cox Communications stock. Gates and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation purchased 13.5 million shares of stock, worth about $515 million.
Gates bought 8.1 million shares and the foundation 5.4 million shares. The stock was purchased from Cox Enterprises, owner of the Atlanta Journal Constitution and the Austin American-Statesman. Cox Enterprises is the largest shareholder in Cox Communications, the No. 5 cable-television provider.
The deal was revealed in Securities and Exchange Commission documents filed yesterday by Cox.
