Orange County, Fla., School Board Stalls in Picking Tax-Referendum Date.

Jan. 29--A sales-tax increase for school improvements is doomed if School Board members refuse to offer voters a property-tax cut, Orange County Chairman Rich Crotty said Monday, adding he would oppose any attempt to put the idea on the ballot as soon as May.

Crotty's support is crucial: The Orange County Commission has to sign off on any School Board plan to put a sales-tax initiative on the ballot. In a letter to School Board Chairwoman Susan Arkin, Crotty said the district is ill-prepared to ask voters for a $2 billion tax increase.

Pushing ahead would be "an exercise in folly and will set back educational improvements as well as damage our ability to attract high-tech jobs...
