Bush's Budget Director Calls Medicare 'Broken,' Says It Endangers Patients.

Feb. 5--WASHINGTON--Mitch Daniels, President Bush's budget director, described the Medicare system as "broken" yesterday and argued that it "endangers patients," unusually blunt remarks about the popular program.

Briefing reporters about the White House budget released yesterday, Daniels dismissed complaints from many Democrats that the Bush administration has allotted too little money for overhauling Medicare. In particular, Democrats have said prescription drug coverage will be impossible under the Republican funding levels, which call for $190 billion for Medicare reform.
