BellSouth to Shut 39 Call Centers, Cut Nearly 700 Jobs.

Feb. 6--BellSouth Corp. said Tuesday it will close 39 telephone call centers -- including ones in Orlando and Daytona Beach -- as part of a consolidation plan that will eliminate about 700 jobs in the company's nine-state service area.
The Atlanta-based company plans to expand its remaining 28 call centers and will offer transfers to employees from the offices that are closing.
BellSouth spokesman Spero Canton said about 200 Florida jobs will be eliminated. Call centers in Orlando, Daytona Beach, Fort Pierce and Panama City will close, while centers in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville and Pensacola will grow.
